random spluttering thats cures itself?

Postby EVL20V » Sun Jul 08, 2007 2:41 am

ok, the 20v ae101 was fouling a plug and droping to 3 cylinders, wouldn't run fine again till the plug was replaced. BUT we advanced the timing today and it was fine then it was struggling and spluttering down on 3 cylinders for about 10-20secs then you keep ya foot up it and it seemed to clean itself and come right again  the car does also blow some blue smoke

no error codes are showing, howver the last error code last week was 14. could this be a weak lead no able to give the plug enough juice? also has a new coil lead.

cheers

didnt you sell this?

I dont think the error code 14 will be from a lead, could be, but more likely from the coil or dizzy having an error/issue...or even ecu, but as it clears prob not.
What degrees did you advance the timing to?
Does it do it every start up, only when cold, only when warm???
Considering the engine is burning oil, its not unlikely that a plug just got temporarly fouled again and cleared itself up once it ran for a bit, ive had that on some old bangers before.
Cant believe im still a member here.

seems to only happen when it gets warm. also noticed the trail of oil actually looks to originate from under intake manifold, near idle control valve, hard to see but definitly not related to dizzy.

I think I've been having the same problem with my celica ST185. One plugs is fouled and I get misfiring during accelleration and when idling. When accelerating it kinda goes in and out of "subaru mode." As the revs get a bit higher and the engine is hot then it seems to go ok.

Its been like this for a while but I've just been living with it because I dont use the car much. The problem used to be much worse and the car was almost undrivable but after replacing the rocker cover breather pipe (had a big hole in it), P/S pump air control valve (one of the plastic ends broken off), injector seals and rocker cover gasket, it now is driveable but still not great.

Its weird how it seems to be just one cylinder.
