safe distance to bore out a motor ? (3t-gte)

Postby scope » Mon Jul 16, 2007 8:26 pm

hey

just asking on behalf of a mate. he's interested in a car that has a 3t-gte bored out to 2.1 litre (bored out 88 mm the auction said)

this is it here http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =108647578

just wondering that it won't blow up?. i personally wouldn't buy a car with a motor that has been bored out that much but i don't know shit so just asking

cheers

i read on the net that if you bore past 89 mm you hit the water galleries (on 2t-g's and 3t-gte's) and this car is bored to 88 mm so i assume it's pretty dodgy ?

i also read that standard bore size is 85 mm so if 1 mm is 39 thou and you said 40 thou so it's three times that meaning you wouldn't trust it ?

89mm is very risky on those old bores
88mm less risky
if there is any corrosion of the water jacket, the cylinder walls can become very thin.

to get 2.1 it must have either offset crank grind or a different crank in it. i'm sure that .120" O/S is under 2 litres, 1940cc springs to mind for some reason.
if the guy dosn't know what been done to it, it probably hasn't been touched.

88mm bore will give 1897cc on stock crank
crank from a 3Y engine gives 86mm stroke (78mm for 3t)
so 88mm bore and 3y crank would give 2092cc

That's good information to know slonlo. Would make for an interesting engine.
We used to supply bits to a few Aussies who had taken 4A/7A out to 2.1 with some very good results.
It was quite common in rally circles in the early 80's for 2T/3T to run around 2L. Like Joe, I thought they were 1940cc.
Have you had experience of this 3T/3Y setup?

Bruce, the 4Y crank is even better, takes it out to close to 2.4 litres!!

supposedly, there i a fair bit of machining to get the 4Y crank fitted, unsure about the 3Y, but it won't drop straight in
3TC.Com is your freind, heaps of build info.
