engine cutting out...ideas?

Postby Ae92typeX » Wed Jul 18, 2007 3:49 pm

My uncles jet boat has a issue with the engine cutting out after about 8mins.
Its an old ford engine, but untill recently has run fine without issue.
He first started by replacing the fuel pump, but 8mins later it cut out.
Have tried several carbs, including one with a fuel window. still made no difference and the fuel kept at full level.
All dizzy etc is fine. Does not overheat or anything.
He mentioned n the phone yesterday he is going to swap the old generator and voltage reg for an alt ...maybe something in this is bung and cutting the voltage supply after 8mins?...however, any other thoughts?

Trialware?

sorry had to say it.

Would be a good idea to put a volt meter on it and see if it drops during the 8 minutes. maybe seizing with lack of oil?
Coil/fuel pump/spark plugs/injectors getting hot and stopping after 8 minutes?

when it dies does it still crank over? if not then yes its a charging fault.

if it does, check for spark with a test plug as soon as it cuts out. Is it running electronic ign or points?. What ford engine?, must be fairly old if its running a generator.

Not seizing, oil fine.
Voltage fine right to cut off
Turns over straight after
Running points. Unsure if he has checked spark straight after
- will find out as I was thinking tonight while going for a walk perhaps its the coil packing a sad after its been running that long?
way old ford engine 60's (so something like an angle box engine(anglia)), but low enough hours of use - starts first pop, dosent burn oil sounds good...dosent even turn into a ballof flames like most pre 90's fords lol
