HKS Cams with factory ECU

Postby Maxwedge » Thu Jul 19, 2007 4:44 pm

Anyone ever tried HKS 256 or 264 Cams with a factory ECU or is the MAP signal too inconsistent requiring an after-market ECU like Link?
Intend using on a 4age bigport with TVIS, TRD 0.8 gasket, head skim, TRD bearings, HKS Springs, Fidanza flywheel, HD clutch, ARP studs and bolts. With the intention of transferring Cams to a Smallport at a later date. Intended use is Rallying in an FXGT, the car is ready to rally but has only a standard motor in place but I have a spare bigport which I am playing with, I have purchased most of the parts required and I am investigating camshaft options, without having to switch to a link at this stage.
Your comments appreciated.

pretty sure a factory ecu by itself won't like you changing the cams by that much

Seemed to work fine in my bluetop for around 12,000Kms, right up until the oil wouldn't stay in it... yet to find the reason, but looks like a rings issue at the moment.
I used reground cams from kelfords, but has a similar duration... can't remember the lift.

if it is AFM-ed then it will be ok (although ECU will not really take advantage in ignition wise). if it is MAP-ed then you will have really rough running (that is if the cams are quiet different to factory ones).

Ahhh... I've done it tho... so am talking from first hand experience.

My one is MAP'd and it ran fine, The factory engine produced 75fwkw and the rebuilt engine with 264degree cams and 0.5mmm TRD head gasket produced 90fwkw on the same dyno. The power graph was very similar on both engines but on the rebuilt engine the torque didn't tail off at 6000rpm and power kept climbing at the same rate till the rev cut at 7600rpm.

Maybe more would be got with aftermarket ECU, AFM, and adjustable cam wheels... but mine gained well without them.
