HELP! - 2E running on

Postby edwagon » Sun Jul 29, 2007 2:57 pm

Ive got an nz new ee90 with a 2e which has the dreaded CV type carb.

As soon as its warm, it runs on quite badly when I turn the ignition off.
It gives a couple of quick splutters followed by a short burst before finally stopping.
I have changed the plugs (which were quite black and sooty), checked the timing and its bang on 5 degress as it says on the sticker under the bonnet. The idle speed sounds right, and even when I adjust it right down until it juuust stays running, it still runs on after the keys off.

I have also had a play and checked that the fuel cut solenoid is working, and when i dssconnect it while its running, the engine stops without running on.

The engine has plenty of coolant and Im sure its not overheating.

What causes these things to run-on like this and how do I fix it?

Not familiar with your particular carb, but it will have some sort of float
chamber containing fuel. This fuel is still available to the engine even
after the fuel cut solenoid closes.

Running on needs an alternative ignition source, which is usually bits of
red hot carbon stuck to the top of the combustion chamber, plug or exhaust
valve. When you turn off the ignition, these bits of carbon will continue
to ignite the compressed mixture. But since it is hard to time glowing
bits of carbon, it doesn't run very well :D

Sounds like you need a de-carb and a tune up. One car I had ran on so
bad, that I had to put it in top gear and stall it to get it to stop

thats pretty bad jondee :P

my old 2E used to do this as well, setting the timing correctly cured the problem however.

There are two common faults with these 2e carb engines which can cause engine running on problems. But 2 questions first : does your engine idle correctly or is it using excessive fuel? Also when you checked timing did you remove vacume hose from the vacume advance / retard on side of distributor?

Thanks for those replys.
I set the timing with the vac advance hoses off, and tried setting it even further retarded, which didn't improve it at all. It is currently set to the specified 5deg btdc.

It has had a 'tune' and I have given it a de-carbon, and it still runs-on quite often (3 out of 5 times or so).
What products do you recommend for de-carboning engines?

It idles correctly, although it does have a slight flatspot in the midrange and it seems to run fairly rich, but not excessivly so.

What are the common faults with these carbs and what are the ways around them?

My old one did the same thing. Got to the point where it would kick over backwards when running on (IE stalling it in 1st would make it lurch backwards!) Running half a tank of avgas seemed to cure mine for six months or so but then replaced it with a 4A.

A few people have told me to replace the carb with an import one (possibly manifold aswell), but never tried it.

I have a spare carb lying around somewhere you can try if you pay the freight.
