w57 behind a 7mgte..will it handle the jandel?

Postby drtydog » Sun Aug 05, 2007 11:01 pm

done a quick search and so far come up with w55/6/7/8 seem to be about as strong as each other, just differant ratios...correct me if i'm wrong?

anyway local wrecker has a w57 in an old grande, and since my supra is auto i was thinking bout buying it to do a manual conversion down the track. but before i go spending money, will it handle the jandel? the car is stock at the moment, but i do plan to do the usual bolt on mods for a lil more power

7 and 8s are the same strength, just different ratios, the 55 is a little bit weaker than them. Not sure about the 56, never come across one before!

my thoughts are that when you get to a decent power level your going to have a problem with clutches.. If you aye easy on the box, power loading should be ok but shock loading (dropping the clutch) will be lethal.

MA70 with W58 has handled 5 years+ of daily driving

Im using a full face factory clutch plate with 2100 pound cover plate

Apart form short life span on master cylinders box has never had problems (has had a C's short shifter in place for last 4 years)

Make the clutch plate the weak link

You need to find the pedal box master cylinder from a GA70 do it right first time

1st you need flywheel and clutch from any "M" series engine (mine came from a column change crown)

Drive shaft yoke is same 21 spline for auto & 5spd but shaft is longer on manual will need to cut reweld balance

In the link above is the parts list you need
