GT4 ST185 Speedo Not working

Postby k1w1y2k » Tue Jul 24, 2007 8:38 pm

I have a 1990 GT4 ST185 and the speedo stopped working. I have checked around the transaxle and removed the dash. What I found was that the speedo is electronic. Can anyone tell me what and where to check to get the speedo working?

The electronic speed sensor is on top of the gearbox, it has three wires. Unplug it and then unscrew the sensor. You will see the stub of the driven shaft looking at you. Try to turn it with a screw driver LIGHTLY. If it turns the internal gears are stripped.

Also look close at the speed sensor you removed. Sniff it (seriously) to see if it smells burn't. I've seen these melt before. Make sure the shaft turns smooth.

Reinstall it carefully as you need to get the small shaft aligned with the slot right.

If you find nothing we can look further.

Thanks for your help Richard, after some searching I got a replacement unit as the old one had burnt out like you said it might have.
