Ae86 Pre/Post facelift Axles Question

Postby beeker » Tue Mar 28, 2006 7:32 am

The sizes are:
Early (1984-85) AE86 axle size is 24.06mm,
Late (1986-87) AE86 Axle size is 25.30mm;

If my axle/diff housing is an 'Early' one, can i install a facelift 'Late' axle into it ?

they will fit in the housing but you will require a facelift diff head or TRDLSD

I have a TRD LSD. So all looks good then.

Next question. I was told you need to cut down the std Axle when you install a TRD LSD. Correct ??

To give you some background, im unsure if my axle is the early or late (have yet to remove and measure). I'll look to buy a couple of new ones as proactive maintenance, and want to get the stronger one, and also understand whats involved (cut down for lsd etc).

Hey. Is it possible to convert an early model diff to late model diff?
Buy a head or LSD, change axles, etc?

Ah rats. Now I wished I'd know this before. I would've done this instead of buying an LSD to fit the early model I've got...

Oh well.. Maybe in the future...

What sort of power can the bigger axles handle? Or is it much the same as the early model, around 200ps?

I installed a TRD LSD on my AE86 (early model) and no trimming needed. everything bolts and fit on fine...

in the D1GP 03/04 season there was a turbo AE86 Trueno - Up garage sponsored - 300hp + 50shot of nos ... this was running late model diff & axles .. it was later changed to IRS G series .. they never show how many things they break but i guess it was every now and then.. probably ok when moving but i wouldnt wanna do too many burnouts if you have alot of grip or tramp

Hmm.. So the late model axles are probably a fair chunk tougher...

sorry to revive such an old thread, but where on the axle do you measure to determine its size? across the splines?

90% sure it's the shaft size, not the splines.
