Running a car without a filter

I know this gets done a lot.

And for city driving etc there isn't heaps of larger dust particles around like if you drove on gravel roads every day.

Just wondering how bad no filter actually is?

Engine in question is a 4k im looking at buying.

Id never run a engine my self without a filter, id be to scared it would slowly stuff up the valve seats and piston rings.

Just wondering how damaging no filters actually are to engines such as 4k's.

I guess a cheap replacement 4k is easy to find though. Just because i need a reliable car..

Dirt/dust from the air is the major cause of engine wear. Road dust
has a lot of silica in it, and silica is abrasive. Running an engine without
a filter just wears it out a lot quicker.

Depending on how much dust, you could easily see 100,000 km worth
of wear on the engine in less than 10,000 km.

But yeah, apparently taking the filter off the 4k does wonders for "performance"

heh, removing any "obstruction" from the intake or exhaust will usually help performance, although it also tends to have fairly significant trade offs.

no cat(ylitic converter)
pros
- less backpressure, better performance
cons
- harms the environment and the things(including people) that live in it.
- usually makes mufflers much less effective meaning a lot more harsh exhaust noise

no filter
pros
- less intake obstruction, better air flow, engine leans a bit meaning usually better performance, and a bit better fuel economy(often negated by having foot harder up it).
cons
- engine will wear faster due to dust inhilation, MAF metre will probably foul up and need cleaning or replacing, and may worsen fuel economy cause further leaning of mixture which may cause damage(eventually).

i usually run a k series with out a filter because i can't be bothered going out and buying one but if it was a newer engine i definitely would then. that is my opinion, it's only a 4k it'll go for ever

driving around the city the air isn't exactly clean though, my new k&n is already disgustingly filthy after only 10,000kms. (perhaps chch roads are just dirty?)
