1990 MR2 non-turbo to turbo engine swap

Postby looseunitnz » Fri Oct 12, 2007 9:11 am

Hey guys,
just wondering how easy swapping a non-turbo engine for a turbo engine is on an 1990 SW20?
The non-turbo engine in it is poked and my brother (the mechanic in the family) reckons it would be just as easy bolting a turbo mr2 engine in there.

I figured I should consult the local internet experts!
I've been reading the FAQ section and I can't find anything specific to this situation. Although I have found, maybe the gearbox shafts are different?

I guess the biggest questions are :
1 : Is the non-turbo gearbox different and/or should I also get a gearbox from a turbo one?
2 : Can I bolt a later year mr2 engine in there as easy or should I stick to whatever generation 1990 is?
3 : Anything else I should know?
4 : Anyone got an engine to spare (in Chch)? lol

TIA

1. Different years have different gearboxes, and between the turbos and NA they have different gearboxes.

2) I don't see why not, as long as it's the 3S- engine, but ofcourse you should stick a turbo box in there, I think 1992 E153 is your bestest bet.

3) You swear you should've sold this car and got a turbo in the first place.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

for the price of a turbo sw20, i really would just go buy one....
you should be able to get a replacement engine ok for yours, then sell it and buy a turbo.

however, the price difference between a going n/a and a dead one maynot be that much. so possibly selling your car as is is the easiest step.
of course if youv filled it with special bits etc that may not be the case.

I got the car cheap enough anyway so I might just put a non-turbo in for the ease of it.
Thanks heaps guys!

As Revhead says, sell your's and buy a turbo, easier and cheaper in the long run.

However, if you do decide to do a swap, then along with the gearbox, you'll also need the axles and hubs from a turbo. As well as an intercooler of some sort and a turbo exhaust system.

Apart from a few wiring differences any 3S-GTE should fit. However you're probably best going for a Gen III+ engine as they use a MAP sensor, rather than the earlier AFM, which you probably won't get on a secondhand engine.

if you have a complete gen2 turbo motor (intercooler, afm, ecu, wiring !not cut! gearbox and axles, hubs, all the hoses etc,) it will take bout 1day to get old motor out and get the new motor in, mabe another day to get all the lil things sussed,

if you change to the turbo motor the ecu and wiring will swap straight over, you simply swap them at the fuse box in the back, piece of cake realy, everything else bolts straight back considering you have the turbo box and axles,
you can use the n/a box but it wont handle the power. you cannot use the turbo box and n/a shafts as they dont fit.
