TRD Lightweight Flywheel - 2zzge

Postby ShiXtr » Tue Oct 16, 2007 4:25 pm

Hi all,

I currently own a 2000 Toyota Corolla AerotourerZ with the 2zz-ge motor and I'm thinking of installing a TRD Lightweight Flywheel.

Any thoughts on how much effect it would have and would it be a huge difference in acceleration? I had a quote from Toyota and to have it installed would cost $2300.

Would I have to change any other parts of the car to fit the lightweight flywheel or would the flywheel just bolt on without any problems?

All comments and recommendations would be great. Thanks heaps

Ouch @ $2300 just to have a flywheel installed, sure pulling the gearbox would be the most time consuming part but Its definitely not a upgrade I'd consider to be worth that amount of money.

$2300 for just a lightweight flywheel + fitting... hmmm seems like a lot of money for unknown gain. I don't know how much of a gain in acceleration you would gain, but I doubt it would be $2300 worth!!

whats standard flywheel weight?

whats TRD flywheel weight?

I agree,

bang for buck,
that upgrade would be terrible.

spend it on an intake and exhaust instead IMO.

unless that consists of 60% labour... flick an email to Revhead for some better pricing on the part.

addmittedly I got it as a returned order, but I paid not a lot for mine.

It'll go in when I get clutch/pressure plate/LSD done

noted, and removed price, as no-one really needs to know what the cost was that long ago.

for that much man you could take your current flywheel into and descent engineering shop and they would whip one up for you for nix compaered ti that. I brought my fly for the 1J for $479 and i now no a guy thats making them and seling them for $350 and he is obviously still making a profit, really a fly is just a roung bit of metal not tham much involved in making one if ya switched on (not that i am) :D

Spend your $ wisely - I don't think you need a big $ flywheel.
I would guess that the 2zzge has a pretty light flywheel to start with, knowing toyota and their performance cars.
Flywheel rotational inertia affects the rate at which the engine can accelerate.
The rate of rpm increase will be greatest in 1st gear and decreases in higher gears.

What are you wanting to achieve?
- better acceleration
- higher top speed
- better handling
- overall improved driving experience??
My (modest) opinion...
Learn how to drive better (driver training, coaching at trackdays), minimal cost.
Then spend $ on handling.
These will maximise your driving experience.

Then look at more power.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Hey Ken,

Thanks for the advice. Im primarily looking at better acceleration and not sure what would be a better choice in terms of cost and acceleration gains.

TRD do some bits for the 2zzge.

from a bit of reading over the last two years or so...
stock flywheel is supposedly 13lb, or close enough to 6kg, TRD one is closer to 4.5

And I agree with the above, learn to drive better(faster), then make it faster still.
