SW20 - what to look out for

Postby FXGTV » Tue Oct 16, 2007 7:20 pm

I am in the market for a turbo sw20. I just want to know a little about what to look out for when inspecting these, and approximately how much should I expect to pay for a good con, turbo sw20?

Synchros (only pre '91 or something tho), bottom end bearings, window rail (or something like that, common problem). Thats all i can think of, im still new to the MR2 world.

Pricewise, tbh they arent worth much. I picked up a very tidy, higher k gen 3 turbo for under $6k.

Shifter cables are known to go in them as well. Beware the price of new ones.......

They're pretty good as far as rust is concerned.

And yea, theres the electric window motor. The mounting points can break.

The engines are pretty good all round. I haven't really noticed any specific weakness. Just be sure to service on a regular basis and don't use cheap oil!

Sounds good to me guys. All my mates think im crazy for buying one. Then again, their main suggestion for another car has been a ceffy or a laurel   .

Learn to ignore them! My mates are the same (all RWD turbo nissan drivers), and come over saying we should go drift my SW20 (hahahaha, yeah right!). But you can only really appreciate one after owning one - the handling is superb! Mine would kill any of my mates cars in the corners, and the suspension is only lightly modified. The more idiots we can keep out of MR2s and in nissans the better   please dont hurt me nissan drivers

I honestly dont think theres many better cars out there for the price.

Other things to look out for are.

Sway bar mounts crack on Series 1 (pre Dec '91). I'm not sure when the problem was fixed so it may also be an issue on Series 2 (pre Oct '93) models. Early swaybar links are also prone to bending.

The water hoses that connect to the oil cooler are known to give problems and are a bitch to replace.

Leaks around the door seals and T-Tops.

Cracked ashtray lids.

Series 1's have crappy brakes, best upgraded to Series 2 items (at least the fronts), and if it's still got the 14" wheels then those need to go as well. If it's had the brake upgrade make sure the space saver is a 16" item or you'll be walking when you get a flat tyre.

Power steering relay gives problems, but it's an easy item to fix.

Ahh yes, I forgot about this one, but had it happen to me. The crack actually forms on the chassis where the mounts bolt up.

I even have a pic from where someone tried to weld it. Ended up having it cut and new plates welded in place:

Cheers guys. The one i'm looking at is going for around 5k. 135k on the clock and looks to be pretty tidy from what i have seen so far. Since i'm still in Aus for 2 more weeks or so though, i'll have to wait to confirm if its a beaut or not ;) :D
