Gearbox Install SW20

Postby Akane » Fri Oct 19, 2007 5:12 pm

Trying to install the box while the engine is on the ground, I'm having a hard time convincing the damn thing to mate up. The spine to clutch plate is the problem, it's kind of in, half way, and then it's stuck. I did my very best to align the clutch plate so it's right in the middle.

Anybody got tips and tricks as to how to put the gearbox back onto the engine? Greatly appreciated, thanks.

Or alternatively, if you think it's ezpz, pop around and give me a hand popping the sucker in, and i'll flick ya some coin, cheers.

put some wooden blocks under the sump so engine would be slightly (about 5-10cm) higher than gearbox, you will be able to mate it up the gearbox if you lift it up completely and manhandle it in place.
You are lucky that your gearbox is just 2WD, I have done same by myself with 4WD, not fun at all, you have to twist it while trying to mate it up, so the transfer case will clear the block... ah the memories

Is it just a single plate clutch or twin?

You may want to double check it with your eyechromitor! And make sure you've greased that hog up!

I manhandled it alright, it's already on blocks near the flywheel end so it sits horizontal. It's a single plate but it ain't greased up, both of you Shhhhhhhh and come over and help me out omgz the gearbox is 60kg i swear if I have to manhandle it anymore my arms will break.

:P

Should I buy one of those clutch plate align things? What a waste of my locktite I'll have to redo the whole process.

if their is no oil inside the motor, stand it on end and lower the gearbox onto it, make gravity do the hard work for you :)

It can be done with the eye, just gotta be careful! Make sure you're looking straight inline with the crank shaft and not off on an angle!

And grease makes it SO much easier

There's no oil in the motor, but I don't want to damage the back covers and the crank pulley

I'll grease that monkey up next time I try it, thanks!

forget about the eye-ometer

you can tell if the plate is centred by feeling around the pressure plate and checking the clutch plate is sticking out (or in) an equal amount on all the sections that are open.

what is it binding on? dowels?

be careful how much grease you put on the boss, you dont want it getting onto the clutch plate (obviously)

I was going to say the same thing, you can't see any thing from the center, you have to look at the out side edge of the plate. If you can't look you can do it by feel as well, but takes a bit more pratice.

Or just use a socket wrapped in insulation tape. ;)

Akane, don't be a whimp, you should try bench pressing that gearbox into the car when the motor is in there, then you arms will really break. Come to think of it, depending on turbo clearance you might just have to do that anyway

Actually it's not that hard, unless you use a twin plate clutch and don't have an alignment tool for it, then you curse and swear as you lift the gearbox for the 10th time

It's binding on I don't know, the housing of the gearbox is not even anywhere near the block itself.

I slide it in about 1cm and it just stuck there, just like that, I am puzzled too.

Tape on socket sounds a pretty damn good idea, and also the feeling around the pressure plate.

Will try it all out soon, and also the grease thing.

Last time dragonx bench pressed it up for me his face turned red, so I ain't even gonna risk my ribs trying. :)

i had a similar problem that had me stumped when putting a replacement gearbox in.
turned out to be the gearbox i had got still had one of the dowels in it and the corresponding dowel was still in my engine  took me about 3 hours to figure out

In that case take he clutch plate out and make sure it's slides over the splines of the gearbox input shaft, there could be a burr or bit of grit in the splines.

lol, there's actually a trick to doing it, you use your knees to lift it, not your arms. If it's all lined up properly take < 10 seconds to get it togther;)

Wouldn't be suprised if there was a bit of grit on the spines as it has been sitting outside for the last 2 months +

I'll give it a good clean, a good align, and get back to you guys.
