gearbox oil recommendations

Postby LEV_101 » Wed Oct 24, 2007 10:21 am

who should i trust ? castrol or toyota.

hi, im deciding to get my gearbox and diff oil changed but

from toyota is says i should use 70w-90 GL3 for gearbox and 85w-90 GL5 for diff.

but for castrol 75W-90 GL5 for gearbox and LSX 90 GL5.

i understand that GL5 is a much higher pressure then GL3 which wears down the gears.

so who should i go with ? :S

thanks

GL5 does not wear gears down, it offers better protection, in fact if you look at it, it is other way around - with GL3 you will have higher wear than with GL5 (that is in 4WD gearbox), 75W-90 is either syntrax (very expensive) or multitrax (I would use multitrax anyway in the gearbox). LSX 90 is LSD oil, if you don't have clutch type LSD, you could put syntrax instead (good for Torsen LSD).
If your box is not 4WD (like Celica or Caldina 4WD gearbox) there is no point to put GL5 oil in it, infact sometimes GL5 oil reacts with brass synchros.
