M-series timing?

Postby ke_25 » Thu Nov 29, 2007 4:51 pm

any one know what the timing should be roughly on a M-U?

checked the timing in teh mx40 today and its stil hanging far right off the scale on the, twisted the dizzy as far as can go and its stil sitting about 10deg away form 0 (guess as its not evan on the scale)

was wondering if maybe was set wrong when they did the head gasket dew years back.. before my ownership..

pulled the 3 vacume lines off to get rid of the advance for timing it also and seems to do nothing?. ones not evan conected to anything.

any help appreciated. cheers

It could be the distributor has been put in one tooth out and won't allow enough adjustment.
Also, where did you pull the vacuum lines from? Did you block them off after removing? If not, it could cause a lean mixture and the idle to increase and as a result the timing will be up a bit or a lot.

True but not...

when you bridge T and E1 it puts the computer in Diag mode and allows it to adjust / take notice of where the timing is set to. So in theory it is better to do it in Diag mode.

Haven't done it that way yet due to crap diag box. Still works but not as well... Havent had it proved yet though.

lol it's pretty tricky, but ok in an AW cause you cant see the marks anyway  .

The theory is to set it to 100rpm and set the timing to about 18' BTDC which should be the same as 10' BTDC in diag mode. Which then means at 1000rpm in you can safely set it to about 25-30' btdc.... and have been told by and old mang that they can take up to 40' advance

i removed all 3 vacume linesw off the dizzy, one was just floating there and the other 2 went to teh same place, liek a t section under the carb, i used one of teh hose and corculated this off so that it blocked it off, didnt change anything?
yer i was thinking might be a tooth out.. its been running like this since i baught it.. i just though id check it when i did teh lugs and yer was way out..
