Pondering over PS...

Postby Boosted_162 » Fri Nov 30, 2007 8:34 pm

Well, i think its about time to get my GT4 going! One thing that needs done is the PS pump (something broke off and leaks). Now, since my SW20 has an electric PS pump, i came to wonder if there is any advantages running a electric PS system over the conventional belt driven pump. I understand why MR2s have electric (so theres no lines to the engine and back?), but is there anything else? Or should i just get another Celica pump? The car will mostly be a fast street car, but hopefully see the track eventually.

Cheers :)

Stuff that! GT4s too heavy for that :P. And i dont think i could find a manual rack for it anyway.

I drive a 5 tonne forklift at work with no powersteering, so i do have strong arms

No PS is fine IF you have a rack for it. Eg, SW's come with a non PS rack, however, as Warwick puts it, they're as rare as gold plated hens teeth. I just happen to have gold plated hens teeth ;)

However, I don't think that the GT4's would have a non PS rack..

Also, the SW is electric/hydrolic, which cuts out over 60kph, but when you're talking about loss and gains, the engine power drawn by the electric pump on the alternator would PROBABLY not be that much different than a typical PS pump. The modification to get the electric pump system in place and working probably isn't worth it.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

i think an electric pump is a good idea, less drain on crank power albiet a minute bit less. :D

How on earth is that possible? Just think of the energy conversion losses and it simply cant be so. Unless the PS isnt exactly "power" more like "weakling" steering.

Its considerably easier and more functional to keep the factory designed PS in its entirity. You may also find that with the differentiation in pressure between the different pumps that using the MR2 system may destroy the seals in the rack.

hard out just fix up the factory set up, all this electric talk is crazy. would be fine if the gt4's front end was as light as a sw. but that will never happen. lol who here drives a AE82 or EP71 with no P/S factory? that shit be as heavy as f**k in town!
