ae111 4age judder when lift off accelerator

Postby Tuscan » Mon Dec 03, 2007 10:25 pm

I've just bought an ae111 BZG and it seems to do this strange thing where when you lift off the accelerator when you're driving along it kinda judders as if the car wants to keep accelerating. Sort of feels like the car is jumping forward a bit.

Poor description I know. Anyway, after searching previous posts I notice a couple of other people have asked about the same thing but I couldn't find any definitive answers. I'm hoping its nothing to really worry about. I've just bought the car and got a mechanic to do a pre-purchase inspection which included a road test. He didn't mention anything.

Is it something I need looked at? Apart from that the car seems to go pretty well...

While I'm here I may as well also ask if there is somewhere in the central Auckland area people would especially recommend to get my car serviced etc? I don't have the skills/knowledge/tools/patience to do it myself...

Thanks in advance for replies :)

Mine has a similar problem, I havent had a good look yet but I suspect it could be the engine mount/s need replacing

Sounds like the same problem my girlfriends one has.

I've tried:
- New sparkplugs
- 2 sets of plugs leads including coil lead (both from 20v's that don't have the issue).
- Coil pack from above
- Ignitor from above
- Injector cleaner
- 98 fuel
- cleaned out AFM
- CRC'd all linkages
- and lots lots more but no change

There is no engine check light indication so haven't had a diagnostic tool plugged in yet but would be worth a try.

Also plan to try another AFM.

If all else fails...meh its not that bad

Ah true. I've noticed a bit of a knocking noise when I go over bumps so maybe that's caused by the engine mounts too?

Although, it seems like the car sort of jerks forward when you lift off. Do you think that engine mounts that need replacing would have that effect? I wouldn't have a clue. I noticed that my Dad's BMW M3 (on the one occasion he let me drive it) did a similar thing but only when you really revved it and then stepped off the accelerator quite quickly...

yeah I realise that. I just mentioned it because it was a similar feeling and I hadn't felt it when driving other cars before. And I thought M3s had variable valve timing like the trueno so maybe there was some connection. But my car does it quite frequently and you don't have to be going hard for it to happen

Check the throttle bodies are nice and clean and not full of gunk.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

My car does the same, all engine mounts are less than 6 months old, after replacing them I've still got MEGA engine movement, throttle off to change gear and if i'm not disengaging clutch real fast the engine clunks back and then clunks again when i put power on again. If i power off in 5th at 50/60 it clunks a little and then if i dont put the power on in the smallest increment, eg, go back to 1/4 throttle after throttling off the engine makes horrible movement/noise. Dunno what the hell is causing it, no errors are thrown in diag mode and the car just keeps passing warrants.

this hesitation/judder seems to be a very common thing on blacktops, mine has always done it, nothing seems to be wrong with the car. It doesn't really annoy me because it doesn't happen all the time and I am just used to it now.

Yeah it doesn't bother me much either and I am getting used to it pretty quickly. I just thought it was unusual so wanted to check it wasn't anything too major. I've just got bought it so I'm real paranoid! :?

I'm doing a road trip of the South Island just after Christmas which will probably clock up 3000+ kms. I'll be getting a service done before I go to make sure everything's in order so I'll ask the mechanic what he thinks about the judder thing... Any recommendations about where to get it done? I've lost a bit of faith in my old garage so am open to suggestions where to try next. Is it worth getting Toyota to do it??

get superstrut checked before you go, dont want to do 3000km with that half knackered.

edit - can be expensive depending on how much needs replacing, theres an FAQ about it im sure.

Checked the O2 sensor?
Sometimes it gets a bit caked up with crap, which is fairly common i'm led to believe

I've had 2 blacktops and the both do it... I never actually noticed it in my first one until my dad pointed it out.

It happens on my current one - dont know what it is. Think its just one of those blacktop things that happens but can't explain...
