Clutch (?) problem

Postby postfach » Tue Dec 04, 2007 3:47 pm

Hey guys, slight problem with my car at the moment....can't select any gears...

Clutch fork seems to have plenty of movement, and no amount of adjustment on the pedal/master cylinder makes any difference. Slave cylinder is new, master was new about a year ago. Fluid has been bled recently (yesterday) made no difference. Sometimes you can get the car in gear before you start it, but if you try to start it like that, even with the pedal fully depressed, it will try to lurch forward (or backwards, if you have reverse).

Note: The car still starts this way, so the clutch *is* working, a tiny bit.

This morning when I had a look, there was a small amount of fluid leaking out of the master cylinder, which to me indicates it needs to be replaced, however, I'm sure they're supposed to last way longer than this, and when the old master cylinder died, it was far more gradual....

And it still doesn't really explain how the fork can still move as much as it should, but the clutch still doesn't work right.

Any ideas? Pivot broken/bent? Pressure plate given up?

It seems odd since it was working perfectly on the weekend, and just suddenly decided to stop working yesterday afternoon when I wanted to drive home.

I doubt its split, it's a solid cast one, not one of those wussy pressed sheet ones.

I don't understand how it could mean the clutch is toast if it still holds the power fine, just can't get in gears?

not uncommon, collapsed press plate will give you the same symptoms, it still applys pressure but doesnt release fully, seen it quite a few times.

if you have full fork movement, then it will be a pressure plate. you will find that the fingers will be staggered and not at the same height.

Nuts. Oh well, at least it's not FWD, makes the job easier :(

In that case - can anyone out there hook me up with a decent heavy duty clutch for a 1JZ mated to a W58?

Also check that the pivot ball isn't broken. I've seen a couple recently

replace the brake master cylinder
and then get someone who knows
how to bleed clutch hydraulics, they
are trickier to bleed properly then brakes.

I know how to bleed a clutch, and the fork is moving enough that I'm certain the small amount of fluid that has leaked from the cylinder hasn't affected its operation. I will, however, replace it. It's obvious to me that the problem isn't as simple as something like a leaky cylinder.
