silvertop 20v smokey(after rebuild)

Postby hsmidy » Sat Dec 15, 2007 8:41 pm

Hey

so i know this has all been covered before but i wasnt able to fined the topics id read over before, anyhow this is the story, brought a 1991 levin its done about 215xxxk's but the engine had a full rebuild at 190xxxk's went in because it was smoking badly, now only about 25xxxk's later its doing the same thing. its chewing through the oil about 1L every 2 weeks and from about 5000rpm it really starts to smoke, its also quiet thirsty and exhaust smells quiet rich and no there are no external leaks and the smoke its black with a little blue haze

only mods are after market exhaust 2.25 i think, i havent had the car up on a hoist yet but i think that they might have removed the 02 sensor when they changed the exhaust, and a pod filter with heat sheild

ive diagnoised the vvt pulley as being toast(as per the instruction in the FAQ) would this cause any of these problems?

and im looking into getting some black top injectors too hopefully stop it chewing the gas.

are there any other common things that go with these engines that i should be looking into before i start looking at ANOTHER rebuild.

all input is appreciated.

you got proof it was a FULL rebuild? perhaps they didn't replace certain parts which contribute to smoking

like injectors ;).

Been in that boat with 20v, rebuilt because of excessive smoke (real bad, grey blackish, no one was able to diagnose, also there were lots of fuel in oil, which led me to believe that rings where worn, but I was so wrong), borewash because of bad injectors, heaps of blue smoke after 5000kms, replace motor with similar kms but face lift one, drove over 100000kms after that no problem (the story is little bit longer but I don't really want to go there). It still goes good, and it will go good for at least 150000-20000kms. Tough little motors.

How did you run the engine in? and do you know the composition of the piston rings?
Chrome based rings tend to be very hard to bed. You may have glazed the bore or the rings depending on how you ran it in.
You dont have an aftermarket filter or oil overflow tank do you?
The answer is Helmholtz!

hey cheers for all the replies, yeah i have got all the recipts from the engine rebuild and it was a full rebuild,

its only got a pod filter really.

not sure on the rings composion, the rebuild was done by the owner before me so im unsure on how it was run in etc,

if i replace the silver top injectors to the black top obviously this will stop the whole running rich but since its more than likely that its suffering from bore wash will running it without the bad injectors be able to bring it back from the dead a little?

or is it once its suffered from bore wash she's set in her ways?

Once it has suffered from bore wash you'll have to re-ring it.
