gen3 gearbox in gen2 mr2, speedo not working!

Postby 92mr2paddy » Thu Dec 27, 2007 9:40 am

well simply i blew da old gen2 turbo box and finally put in the long awaited gen3 box, it all works mint except for the fact that the old gearbox had an electronic speedo and the new one has the cable version(spring or whatever it called) so i cant connect it, hence the spedo sits at 0km/h and the k's dont work,

is there a simple fix to this or will i need to get an electronic speedo or a gen3 speedo cluster??

cheers pat

I think you wrote some of your sentence backwards.
I got a gen 3 box in my mr2.
I just pluged the cable driven gear into the gen 3 box and done!

So the car is originally has an Electronic speedo?
Can you not unscrew the sensor off've the drive and swap it onto the new box?

I found that was the case with W5* gearboxes

Err all boxes from '92 and newer had electronic speedos. The early('89-'91) boxes only had cable drive speedos.

You may not have a gen3 box...which means it probably won't be an LSD box either.

You should find that your driveshafts won't fit neither, IIRC the Gen 1 gearbox has a different width and had different shafts to compensate.

I blew my Gen 2 box before and Replaced it with a gen 3, it was identical. Both have the same electronic speedo drives.

hi guys, yes i did swap the electrical sensor from the old box now,
to the new box, it is a gen 3 and it has the LSD (simple test confirmed this 8) ) only thing i can figure is that someone before me changed it 'back' to the gen1 style cable feed

*edit* and what al said if it was a gen1 my axles wouldnt fit, but they do :P

,,,, dont know y but aparently that box was used in sum custom car for a while till the motor blew up. that according to the old owner anyway.

cheers guys,, u guys always have a solution
