is it normal for oil filter seals to fail?

Postby flygt4 » Fri Dec 28, 2007 3:49 pm

my caldina dropped all its oil today, I managed to trace the problem to the seal on the oil filter. luckily i caught it before the oil got too low and damaged the engine. (it dropped about half the oil)

now the car is under warranty and so i take it to be serviced regularly by a workshop. the last service was done just under 10 000km ago so its due anyway.

do these commonly fail suddenly or is it likely the filter was installed incorrectly at the last service?
is it worth chasing up the workshop that did the last service?

Very rare that they do fail, sometimes it can be an installation problem, but if its done 10,000k's since its likely to be a product issue. Take it back to where it was serviced and see if they can suss it out with their supplier.

i wouldnt say its common at all

i work a repco and ive never seen a filter seal fail as a result of manufacturing faults. and we sell hundreds of filters a day.

if the filter was the wrong size ie. has the same thread but wrong seal it could happen. or if the old seal is stuck on the block, but you would see that right away.

It should be a Z386(ryco) filter for an S or A block.

it was a repco filter, and the part number checks out correctly for caldina gt. it was a z386. it was leaking from the bottom edge closest to the ground.

the old seal was stuck on the block as the filter came away without it.
is this caused by not applying a film of oil to the seal when you install the filter?

seems to be all fixed now anyway, but i need to check the warranty as i may need to get it changed again by a proper workshop , or it may be OK.

luckily i was only travelling from masterton to wellington today , and i only left a trail over the rimatakas. im going to the hawkes bay in a few days and that culd have ended badly if i hadnt picked this up now :?

seen it heaps
caused both by faulty filter and incorrect fitment
screw em upto tight and the seal deforms. also often the oring isnt seated in its groove correctly and if the installer doesnt notice it it can cause issues
iv seen the seams leak, and i even had one come apart when tightening....
all on GUD filters.

what does the oring look like? see any where its been pinched?

sad thing is i had to get another ryco one today as i need the car going for long distance travel.
normally i'd just put a TRD one on as they aren't much more in cost and i trust them a lot more than a shitty generic one.

most annoyed at the litre of oil dropped in my driveway tho

we used ryco/repco/GUD at bowaters a lot
roughly one dodgy filter every month or so.
they had an issue with Z9s a coupla years back, in 6 weeks we had a whole box go back :?

We had a customers car do it in the workshop.
( we dont do oil or filters at work, it was in for an unrelated problem)

I looked inot it back then and apparantly it was not uncommon mitsi's when cold due to high oil pressure.

I know at one stage there was an issue with the South African produced filters, but in the 3 years I've been with repco/appco I've only ever seen one genuine failure. GUD paid for a new motor for that customer.

Haven't had issues with the seals, have had a few Ryco ones leak out the seam though. And a couple of diesels ones come loose if you don't tighten them up really good.
