4age Gearbox splines

Postby slighty_sykotic » Thu Jan 03, 2008 6:58 pm

Hey guys,

Having a bit of trouble with a MR2 gearbox...

The motor/gearbox were removed from the car, and the old clutch was throw away..

Got a new clutch kit from BNT. Got flywheel machined.

Took it all home and went to bolt it up and the gearbox spline is to big..

Im pretty dam sure its a c5X gearbox, as it looks like all other c5X gearboxs i've played with. (never seen a e series box though, i dont think).

Clutch I have is a 212mm with 24.1mm spline (memory) by 21 teeth.

The clutch fits the flywheel fine, but the gearbox of course wont slide on.

In the BNT shop I looked at the book, and the only clutch I can see that might go, is a 28 or something size. But that is a 225mm clutch (for 4agze). and If my 212mm clutch fits my flywheell, im not going to be able to use a 225mm am I.

Thanks,

Hey man... don't panic yet. It can be bloody hard to get a gearbox and clutch together even when it's right. First of all I'd suggest taking the clutch cover off and fitting the clutch disk to the gearbox spline to ensure it is correct. Dont' forget to clean the input shaft well, and a little oil on the shaft can help.

The best way I've found is to turn the motor on it's end, clutch/flywheel sticking up. Support it with some blocks of wood. Lower the gearbox down, and have a mate hold the bellhousing to guide the shaft into the clutch. The weight of the gearbox will 'assist' the shaft into the hole. Seems to be far easier than doing it with engine and gearbox both parallel to the ground. If you do it slow and carefully you won't do any damage and save a heap of time and energy.

Both motor and box are lying oin the ground now.

I did try to put the clutch disk onto the spline. Its not right. It doesn't fit.

Thanks though :)

What I need to know are the different spline sizes. is there a spline that has 21 teeth, but is bigger than 24.1mm. And comes in 212mm.

And Si, i do! ill txt you tomorrow.
