ST205 Intercooler - what are the limits?

Postby sergei » Thu Jan 10, 2008 11:15 am

Righto - I want to know what are the limits of stock WTA IC on ST205.
and no, I am not after "Just put 1000x500 front mount bro". If I need to upgrade I will go for WTA (probably custom). I have seen a lot of WTA cores that are claimed to work with over 800hp that are similar sized as ST205 core (good example is the one on drivenperformance site).
Has anyone maxed-out the factory intercooler, at what power levels it happened, what boost and what turbo?
The car will run sprayer bar and Water injection.
Also Bazda turbo will be probably used.
Also it will see 25+psi.
The intercooler radiator will have a fan on it and pump switched permanently on, as well as the water reservoir will be added as heat capacitor (well cold, is a better term).

There was a flow rate comparison on mr2oc.com, between a stock MR2 i/c, a GReddy sidemount, a ST205 I/C amongst other things.

I can't spin the numbers off the top of my head, but the ST205 just come approx 5-10% shy of the flow rates of the GReddy sidemount.

And it has been *assumed* by the wide mr2oc community that the GReddy sidemount craps it's pants around 450hp, lower if you're doing it touge style.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

But with side mound would it "crap out" due to inability to cool properly more than anything?

Be carefull buying IC's etc from stores in nz. You can buy the identical product off ebay usually for much cheaper. W2A Ic's included.

Yeap, sidemounts heatsoak really bad, although 2x SPAL 7.5"s does help a lot, that's why touge style driving is really bad for it, but flow rate wise, the information is there.

EDIT: Here you go you lazy ass

I can't comment on the ST205 one (yet) but I do know how TTE modified the ST185RC one. They added an extra row of cooling fins and internal vertical stiffening struts. High boost can split the seam around the edges. Do the math, 25psi x 12" x 16" = 4800 pounds, a fair upwards load.

I've got thermocouple positions welded onto mine but I haven't done anything to monitor them yet.

a friends Mr2 in oz with st205 WTA and a massive planet sucking turbo runs about 280 KW easy at the rear treads , its in an Aw11 , with a fairly stock gen3 and stock st205 WTA bits

Franks St205 Group A with a larger heat exchanger but standard st205 core ran 235 AWKW on a gen3 and heatsoak was becoming an issue ..

those are the only " up there " figures i know of offhand ..

both did not use water injection , or water spraybars
