Gearset upgrade

Postby FST4RD » Mon Feb 04, 2008 8:51 pm

If you wanted a gearbox to hold up to a bit more HP then the factory box can handle without doing a gearbox conversion from another car but keep it street drivable whats going to be best?
For example if you were to get the first 3 gears made up, full straightcut dog gears are not going going to be user friendly on the street.
Are there any other options?
What about cryo or shot peening? How much more horsepower is that really going to support?
Just weighing up the options as aftermarket parts for my gearbox are zero and gearboxes are coming harder and harder to find and going to be doing more things to the motor soon and thinking about future proofing the box first.

Starion gearbox, trust me there are no aftermarket bits for them. Apparently they are good for 350hp but I blew one up with half that by accident....
My end goal is going to be about 300Rwhp so really want to upgrade the gearbox as thats the weak link in the drive train....

Funny just talking to a joker in the know with the Starions and he said the gearset in the box is to small and no dogboxis going to stop the gears from spreading and stripping :?
So going to look at either a W series box conversion which could potentially not be cheap or an RX7 Series 4 odd conversion which would be cheaper cause Mazda quite conveniently bought out a ute that had a mitsi motor in it that has a bell housing that bolts to both the 4G63 and the rx7 box at the sametime :D
