Generic turbo monifold(although per engine)

Postby barryogen » Mon Feb 11, 2008 1:31 pm

I had a thought over the weekend and wondered why there isn't such a thing.

I'm meaning that the monifold would have a generic type flange where the turbo would sit, so that you could change whatever type of turbo you are using for one of a different type, by changing the adapter plate to suit the new turbo.

Now I realise that if this was a good idea then people would/should already be doing it, so what have I missed?

I realise that the adapter
a, would need to be fairly small to fit in any engine bay
b, couldn't possibly fit all turbo types
c, would need to flow suitably

a and b are fine, and should be able to get around, but I guess that c would be the show stopper, it would be the collection point for all the exhaust, and would need to be perfect.

your thoughts guys?

i think the biggest problem with something like this is that every cars engine bay is different. you wouldn't be able to sue the same shape manifold on a gt4 as you would on a evo or a wrx.

the next issue i see is. with a generic adapter plate which you woul then bolt a specific plate onto. where would the bolt go? because each turbo has a different bolt layout you couldn't get it to match up trough the specific flange then through the generic flange. see here

now i believe the reason the bolts go straight through the flange is because of the weight 15mm of thread isnt enough hence why they go through and have a nut. i could be wrong though

heh, thats why I said "per engine" as in say for the 3sgte you have one, for 4g63 you have one etc.

I was meaning header, generic flange, tube(probably approx 1" long), "correct" flange.

yea but like the header may not fit in a mr2 like it will in a celica or caldina

,mainly because each application has different fitment issues,
subaru to mitsi turbos sit differently as do ihi to garrett turbos,
some the turbine housing is reversed etd

ive done a couple with t3 and tdo5 multi flanges, but they are more of a pita than anything,

sweet as, I gathered that there would be a good reason not to make/use them, and once again Toyspeed has sorted out my thoughts. :)

Tee hee..

More like Toyspeed has once again shown that, as the average "joe", we aren't creative or skilled enough to make a solution that may work.
