Urgent: Alternator light on in st185 gt4

Postby ALLTREC_TURB » Fri Mar 07, 2008 2:37 pm

This happened on the way to wokr the other day, but have just sold the car and it is getting picked up of sunday so it really needs to get fixed, just wondering if anyone in here might have any ideas as to what might be wrong.

Auto electricial has come out and check that the alternator is actually charging and it is, have also just replaced the main 100A alt fuse in the engine fuse box, which has not fixed the problem either.

There are also two ither lights up on the dash, one I think is the cat convertor heat light thing, which is just above the alternator light on the lefthand side.
The other is an orange light on the right hand side which has a car diagram with lines coming out the front of it which i presuming sybolises the front lights or something

If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them

did he not get to the bottom of the problem??

Turn on the ignition,
make sure the light is on without the engine running.
Start the engine,
see if the light is still on.
if it is then,
turn off the car unplug the alternator.
turn on the ignition with the alt still unplugged.

Light is on means a wiring problem.
Light is off continue to next step.

Use a test light with a 12V bulb, not a multi meter,
check for power on the wiring plug to the alt with the alt unplugged,
there are 3 wires, two of the pins are beside each other on the same angle and the other is across the top, check the one that goes across the top, should be power with the key on or off, wont matter.

Power there faulty alternator, ( that's my bet)
No power, faulty wiring.

Now that presumes that the alt is charging as you have stated.
The alternator can charge ok but the regulator inside can still bring the light on if the reg is faulty.

Only other test is to wiggle the wiring while the car is at ilde and get someone to watch the light and see if it flickers,
if so a wiring fault.

Although most symptoms seem to lead to wiring fault, on a std loom it is very rare.

Had a similar problem - I think the main wire to the alt was all coroded and stuffed - replaced it and problem sorted.
