Fault code issue RE timing

Postby GOLDAE86 » Thu Feb 28, 2008 5:16 pm

Ive recently rebuilt the motor in the 86 and it goes well etc etc other than i cant set the timing. When i bridge the terminals on the firewall nothing happens, no revs drop nor no change on the timing light. So i checked for fault codes by using the same terminals and it came up with code 11.
Codes 11 is switch signal, but wat is switch signal.have checked tps and a few other items but still dosn't work.It worked before i took engine out etc so if any of u electrical gurus know wat is it or can help in anyway that would be great.Cheers

it will be the tps switch.

Sw signal is either that, or the electrical load sw, which is a/c etc.

Cant set base timing unless the car is at idle, ( tps closed)
and there is no load on the engine, (a/c etc off.)

I have replaced the tps switch with another that i had and made no difference, as well as removed the A/C relay had everything turned off, cleared the ecu mem etc started it got it warm, turned it off then red the codes again and it was still there, so im kinda stuck. The only other thing is the tps my be in wrong place(i hate electrics) do u have any voltage specs for adjusting em

you need to make sure that the idle switch is closed,

one of the voltages should change the moment you open the throttle.

Check the voltage on the two middle pins and move the TPS the full range of adjustment,

One will be varying voltage, and the other will be high to low volts.

the high/low voltage one is the switch.
Move it slowly untill the voltage has just switched and lock it in place.
open the throttle a few mm and it should switch back,
if it doesn't, then unlock it and twist is slowly back the other way till it does and lock it in place again. Then move the throttle and it should switch.

If it does not, you have done it wrong or it's faulty.

You've said move it slowly until the voltage has just switched - to high or low?
Then by opening the throttle it should switch back - same question...?

Dont remember, but doesnt matter anyway as it is the switch point that matters not the actual voltage.

Hook a meter to it and if it high voltage, start there, if it's low start there.

Yes idle switch is in the TPS.

What throttle body and tps are you using? still all the bluetop stuff?

I've used the info here viewtopic.php?t=29042 for setting my TPS before and it seems to work ok.

I'm not sure if you need to unplug from the loom to get accurate readings or not, as I have just a plug off another loom and I just attach the ohmmeter to those wires.

Having said all that, I just set the switch point, because that is all that can really be set. Stick the feeler guage in between the stop & arm and it should read something, pull the guage out and the reading should change.

Check the signal at the ECU plug end of the wire? maybe the wire is broken?
