Rust!

Postby solitaire » Fri Apr 11, 2008 10:29 am

Hi All,

Trying to remove some rust from my door sills, I wouldnt say its too bad... just surface rust. But i would like some advice from people who have done this sort of thing and seen how their efforts went over a year or so.

What i am planning to do it strip the paint, sand it back, treat it and prime it. I may respray the car at some stage but im more concerned about having the car last than what it will look like.

Does this sound like a good thourough method? I want this car to last.

What products have you used and recomend?

Thanks gents :D

Currently doing EXACTLY this with my KE25, both drivers & passengers sill, alhtough I suspect my rust is just a tad bit worse than yours

Rust Product: Think its actually called Rust Convertor (could be wrong), can be brought from Bunnings, comes in a white plastic bottle with green lettering, is fairly well priced too & a little goes a hell of a long way.

One very important thing to remember with rust treatment products is......

Never totally remove all the rust!!!!!

Sure remove all the flakey stuff etc, however NEVER go right back to bare metal, if you do the product has nothing to react with, which is the cruital step in the process.

Steps I followed were
1 - grinder with wire brush attached, remove paint to expose rust
2 - remove any flakey rust
3 - clean surface of dust etc
4 - apply rust convertor product
5 - prime

ah sweet thanks chief... so just apply it to the rust area?

Problem i have is that within two days some very light "rust dust" appear on the bare metal around the rust... (it has a slight orange tone, running my finger over the bare metal leaves my finger rust colored).

Should i apply the treatment to this bare metal area as well? or am i safe to prime it? just dont want rust occuring under the primer if that makes any sense...

Nope, go nuts with the stuff.

Areas that I did happen to take back to bare metal were covered with rust convertor

That is due to bare metal being exposed to the air. Oxidisation is taking place, basically the start of rust. Slap the rust convertor straight over the top of it, let it dry and then prime

For my piece of mind, any area I removed paint etc from got a good coating of the stuff, rust is the enemy of any car, so my way of thinking is, if its exposed treat it then prime it.

here are a few example pics of what metal will look like AFTER having that rust treatment brushed on it.

Note that the dark areas are the areas where it has reacted with rust (or the start of it) and done its job (keep in mind the whole area was attacked with a grinder & wire bush and exposed to air for a while before being treated.

and yes the sill it going to be repaired correctly...

There are better products out there now than PA-10.

POR15 is a paint that can be applied over rust. Dries to a hard impervious layer.

They do a good little starter kit.

The gloves are *highly* recommended. Once dried on skin this doesn't come off.

also a fan of POR15, my starlet is covered in patches of it until the day I decide to paint it. Also did the whole floor and patches on underside. patches over a year on are showing no signs of rust coming back.

I started on that kit but would recommend buying a:
http://www.por15.co.nz/POR15Prod/superstarterkit.htm
as it comes with marine clean which is a concentrate cleaner and works well!

the kits also come with instructions on how to do the whole job. You won't be dissapointed.

and yes many a time i've had black POR15 on my arms for a week at a time due to not noticing it was there till it was too late
