my trusty 4age wouldnt start this morning

had no problems with this since i dropped it in my ke30.

this morning was colder that usual...and when i went to turn it over...had nothing..fuel pumps were going. all the right lights were on on the dash but just nothing on turn key, dash lights dimmed when on start.

rocked it over in 1st still same same, got home tonight and it started, but started roughly which it never does, took afew more cranks.

tested battery tonight 13.3v car off and 14.4 V on running.

makes me wonder if battery is on its way out and didnt like the cold morning???? its faily new...might be still under warranty!

have noticed afew times a pause before it starts cranking when your turn the key, only happens sometimes though :S

see what happens tommorow morning. supposed to be taking her to auck next weekend too!

it may be a loose connection at the key/switch? has that wiring be altered at all, kill switch installed etc etc?

hard to track, but best way is next time it won't start - try short the starter motor out and see if it starts. if it does, it obviously has all power etc and the key/starter wiring is faulty.

before you play around with the ignition check the start signal at from the starter. If its loose or not plugged in it wont crank over. As if the starter is dead..

yeah my old bluetop starter had that problem - was so old the terminal was slightly corroded and the plug didnt always make the best contact.

can you hear the starter solenoid clicking? if so the starter may just need some new brushes. next time it does it try clicking the key back and forth between on and start, it sounds like a starter motor issue to me!

(if you end up on the hunt for a new starter, get a smallport one - reduction type ftw!)

I had the same problem recently, I sprayed CRC on the earth plug on the starter motor and that seemed to fix it.
I then also replaced the 2 engine earth straps with ones without plugs, cos it seemed silly to have an earth connection with a plug that may corrode.

*EDIT*

Opps, I just realised that the 'earth plug' on the starter motor is not an earth wire but the positive feed for the pull-in coil.

also if there is a delay with the starter working, or worse the starter doensn't do anything would be best to check starter itself./ probable worn bushes. It may not be the similar problem to what you're experiencing but it's worth a check, One of my starters had that problem, was slow to turn over on the key and wa exactly that, the drive end bushes so worn that there was loads of end plasy

Hey bro, I've unfortunately got the same problem with my redtop t-vis in my mr2 - won't start and I wanted to go for a hoon round twilight road this evening, haven't driven it in a week or two

I've got this I think - I can hear a loud clicking, and it won't turn over :/ Looking in the bgb I think you're right, my stater motor is probably buggered, could use a new battery cable as well really. How much do these cost? Bit of a pain in the arse really, wanted to take the mr2 to the beach this weekend...at least I didn't park my other car into the garage with it I guess...

Also, um, where exactly is the starter motor? I'm capped at the moment so can't really search online, but the bgb is saying something about the flywheel, and a haynes manual i have is talking about removing part of the exhaust to get at it Is it a bit of a mission?

on 16v 4ages the starter motor is on the exhaust side of the engine - under the manifold. i've never looked at one in an mr2 though, to know how much the exhaust gets in the way.

i find removing the oil filter makes it easier to get it out. yeah, i've had the starter out of my car about 7654 times.

Don't forget t disconnect the battery before you start removing it or you'll get lots of sparks when you short the battery cable against the exhaust and nearly crap yourself when it happens

Cheers guys, time for new oil & filter anyway so it's just something else to do at the same time! Not looking forward to undoing anything to do with the exhaust though - it's the only part of the car that seems to have been struck by the typical aw rust, the bolts are looking pretty nasty Maybe my course related costs could cover a new exhaust while I'm at it...
