rx7 wont start....

Postby Skin » Sun May 18, 2008 5:48 pm

Yes i know what your thinking, but its not like that...honest

Obviously not a toyota question, but im hoping someone might be able to shed some light. Ive put a replacement engine into my series 7 rx7, and while im getting compression, fuel and spark, the thing wont start. Short of putting the two CAS around the wrong way(pretty sure i havent), im not too sure what the problem could be. It currently hasnt got any belts fitted, but im jumping it off another car and its turning over fine, so that shouldnt be the problem. Anyone got any REAL ideas?

If its got spark, fuel and compression, make sure the throttle is actually open. Otherwise the only reason it wont fire is because you're a muppet and have the ignition stuff assaboutface

Also, stock ECU or PFC?

series 8 ecu. Me and jon have been racking our heads as to what it could be. Going to fit the belts tomorrow, on the remote chance im not getting enough voltage by jumping it off another car

the voltage generated by the alternator while you are turning it over is going to be close to zero.

i dont know shit about rotors but if it were a piston engine i would be looking at timing

yeah mate not far off, new battery to start with, got new plugs? if yes then look at your timing.

would be your best starting point. you may have spark, but if its at the wrong time your not gunna fire. any fault codes coming from the ECU? what fuel are you running it off/trying to start it on. if its old/stale it prob wont fire either, are the plugs sweet? im assuming you have checked the injectors are opening.. not just fuel at the rail. get sum ether up it, blow a seal out haha :) and last but not least, check earth straps to the motor.

Cant remember if FD's have it, but do you have the fuel delivery/return lines around the right way? that catches heaps of people out when doing engine swaps on FC's.

Its got fresh plugs and fuel, and we checked in the chambers to make sure its getting fuel, and yep plugs were wet. No error codes either. We marked the fuel feed/return lines before removing the old engine, so thats covered. Im really not sure if there is any other way of playing with the timing on it, as they run CAS's and that should sort everything out.

GAH!!!!!!

rotary troubleshooting
q1: did you install apex seals
[] Y
[] N

If you answered N to Q1, skip to solution 1, if you answered Y proceed to Q2

q2: did you install mad bridgey and modz
[] Y
[] N

If you answered N to Q1, skip to solution 2, if you answered Y proceed to Solution 3

Solution 1: sell car on trademe with description of 'fresh as rebuild', buy honda
Soltuion 2: not a true rotary fan, sell car, buy honda
Solution 3: Yeah well its not like its gonna run anyway. Bet the engine condition was described as 'fresh as' too.

You haven't put the leading coil on one rotor and the trailing on the other?

Haha, caught me out before, doing that.. was a late night!

Skin, have you put the belts on yet, and tried to start it? My only other thoughts would be flooding, I know FCs are really bad for it, (to the point where we had to install a fuel cut switch to be able to start it!) not too sure about FDs but its' something I'd look at.

Was the engine a rebuild, or just another motor? I'd recommend attempting to towstart it, only if its' a half-worn motor.. not if its' new, I've seen motors junked like that.

Its a used engine, 60 odd thousand km on it. My gut feeling is that its not getting the right amount of spark. I fitted belts to it last night, changed the battery over to a charged one as well as jumping it off another car, and deflooded it and still no joy. Im gonna take it to a mates workshop over the weekend, hes a bit of an electrical guru plus the car needs some exhaust work done as well so might as well try and kill two birds with one stone
