AE101 GT-Z (Superstrut) shock/spring replacement

Postby Crampy » Fri Jun 27, 2008 4:56 pm

I've been ringing around for quotes on shocks and springs for my GT-Z.
It kinda sucks having to deal with the superstrut suspension, but oh well.

Anyways, just want to see what others have gone for and results.

SPRINGS:
Are Jamex springs any good? I had themon my AW11 S/C and thought they were sweet. got a price for TRD ones. Almost twice of what I can get Jamex ones for. Are they worth the extra money?

SHOCKS: (Mainly the fronts causing replacement problems)
Got a price for TRD coilovers (ouch) and TRD Struts (ouch again). I got a quote for KYB ones, which were once again almost half the price of the TRD items.
The quote was for replacement struts (front), or for cheaper they said they can cut the strut open and put an insert in, after modifying it a bit (something about a retaining clip in the tube). Anyone had this done, any good?
SAS gave me a quote of $235+GST and they'd send them away to get the inserts done (Manukau).

I'm leaning towards KYB shocks and maybe Jamex springs, or the ones in there now. It's got lowered springs in it now, but don't know the brand.

Thoughts and experiences?

I’m just replacing the shocks in my daily drive bzg s/strut (see my thread). It has lowered springs unknown brand and I’m just using new factory shocks from Mark at Manawatu Toyota. $125 each. If your just using it for street work they should be fine?

Rear shocks in superstrut models are/seem identical to the non superstrut ones so you can just use them.

I have non s/strut trd coilovers in my race car bzg but that’s for track use and a bit too hard for street use esp if you are carrying females.

Sweet cheers.
I'm getting another quote back from Mark about stock ones. He got me the price for the TRD jobbies.
I can get a resonable discount at BNT for the KYB ones, so might go that way. I'll have a think about it though. The KYB's are supposedly 30% firmer than stock.

Yeah I reckon the same.
I suppose they'll say what they want to sell the bits.
Yep all prices I've been getting are for S/S ones.
