What exactally does the charcoal can do? Is it for recycling the fumes from the tank or something?

Pretty much, the charcoal canister is used to trap the fuel vapors. The fuel vapors stick onto the charcoal, until the engine is started, and engine vacuum can be used to draw the vapors into the engine, so that they can be burned

Definition: A storage device in the evaporative emissions control system. It is a small cylindrical or rectangular container that contains activated charcoal particles. The charcoal traps gasoline vapors from the fuel tank (and carburetor on older vehicles). Later, the vapors are purged and drawn into the engine when the vehicle is being driven. See EVAP System. Lies.

You can vent it straight into ATM. I personally put a fuel filter on the end of the so dirft wont go up the line.

what happens when the turbo is pushing 1 bar through the vacuum hose into the charcoal canister?

is the charcoal canister really needed?

You mean pushing 1 bar aginst the one way check valve between the manifold and canister

It isn't needed. Mine vents straight to atmosphere. My intention was saving (a little) weight and also reducing the complexity in the engine bay.

the standard ecu will expect to have those hydrocarbons avaliable at certain operating conditions though, so you may find it running leaner than is ideal sometimes.

evap normally only functions at cruise speeds, but increased combustion temp from lean mixture could lead to knocking in high compression blacktop, leading to retarded timing and less power!

but probably not.

for the above poster, one way valve is part of evap canister.

edit - for what its worth, you wont see any performance gains from losing it, and you will probably get better mileage with it installed. think of it as getting your moneys worth - those vapors are your $2.25 per litre gasoline evaporating, if you vent it to atmosphere its like chucking money out the window!

and burning the vapors is a much more considerate way of disposing of them :P

Interesting yes.

Unfortunately I cant consider mileage as this isnt an economy car.

Ive installed a link now so wouldnt think it would give a dog about how to get the most out of $2.25. And its damn ugly and in the way of all my pretty chrome & silver shit.

Edit: i like burning though

Just ditch the canister because its big and ugly and plum the evap line straight into manifold. Keeping the 1-way valve if it has one of course!

Have done this and never had a problem. Also dont get a shity smell from all the fuel vapors in your cabin.

the valve is part of the canister in most cases.

if all you are concerned about is performance you are better off venting the tank to atmosphere, as fuel vapour is more likely to detonate than burn.
