ST215 Caldina GTT Cambelt (again)

Postby snwtoy » Wed Jul 02, 2008 10:29 am

Hi All

Mine's long overdue, and I'm dropping it off tonight to get done.

From what I've read

belt $45
tensioner pulley $55
auto tensioner $55
idler pulely $50

Is this all that needs replacing? What's the story with the water pump? Definitely need replacing or leave it at the mech's judgement?

Cheers

I would replace all seals (2x cam 1x crank 1x oil pump), water pump, tensioner bolts, thermostat and coolant.

Thanks Sergei. Do you have any idea if the seals are expensive/add significantly to the labour involved? I assume it would require draining the oil to replace these seals, so new oil+filter also required?

I hadn't thought about the thermostat. Is it reasily replaceable without going near the cambelt? If so I will probably do that myself.

With seals they are not too expensive about ~100 for lot (genuine, if you go for after market they are $10-$15 each), there is no much extra labour, unbolt the cam/oil pump pulleys which is about 15 min max.
There might be trouble removing crank sprocket, but should not be a problem for a pro. It is worth doing it as they were not probably been replaced and dry and worn. It would be a pity if they start leak after you have done the cam belt, which would mean you will have to repeat the cam belt exercise to fix the oil leaks. BTW you don't need to drain oil to do them, they are well above oil level.
As for thermostat, well you could do it your self (15 min job), but when the mechanic going to pull out water pump it will have to swap the thermostat anyway.
I would do water pump at same time because if it will leak (and it will, it just matter of time) you will have to do same cam belt labour all over again.
