Removing brake caliper seal.

Postby Quint » Mon Jul 07, 2008 10:45 am

Had a good thump at removing the caliper seals from my XX to rebuild them (when braking pulls VERY hard to the right).

Pulled them apart and all that good fun stuff but the seal is proving very difficult to remove, i've tried to put a small screwdriver between the piston wall and the seal (the seal sits in a groove) to try and 'bend' it out.

Failed.

Very old calipers so everythings a bit seized up. Anyone got any hints on how to get the suckers out? About the only options i have left are to use a chisel to dent the band but i don't want to risk scoring the inside of the piston wall. So any other way would be choice.

if you are replacing it (I hope you are) with new, soak it in thinner it will make it very soft and expanded it will be a lot easier to remove.

take it to someone that does it for a job imo

I got my rear calipers freshened up for like $60, not even worth the hassle / risk of damaging them
