rebuilding w5* gearbox, whos done it ?

Postby Jonno2002 » Thu Aug 07, 2008 9:04 am

pulled my w55 out last night as im changing engines but also want to fix the box as it whines quite badly at idle, the input shaft bearing has play in it so that will need replacing but i want to know how hard it is to do myself, ive read the instructions for disassembling a w5* box but it does look quite complicated or is it not as hard as what i looks ?

should i do it myself or get it done somewhere ?

suggestions or help please ?

this is where im at now with it:

Those bearings are easy to replace as long as you have the tools to do it properly, pullers etc to get them off

The bearings are pretty expensive to it cost me $100 just for the bottom bearing in your photo

Need to "heat" the new bearing into place also, putting the bearing into hot oil to fit it on, cant just punch it on (trust me i know)

good idea to invest in some loctite freeze and release also, or a co2 fire extinguisher
