Repairing Carbon bonnets

Postby barryogen » Thu Aug 07, 2008 1:56 pm

Well I've come across a cheap ish carbon bonnet, but it has a few runs* and the odd scratch, like it's been keyed or similar.

The intention is to paint it anyway, so the finish on it is not cruicial, but I figure I should find out how to do it properly anyway. Also, some of the weave you can see through, is that normal, or is it a crap job that I should stay away from?

*as in lumpy bits where they have put too much resin(?) and it has run off the edge and set.

When I say cheap ish, it is dirt cheap.

Oh, and I know it's kinda ricey/wanky to have a carbon bonnet, but at this price I can't say no.

is it a full carbon bonnet? or is it a fibreglass skeleton with a carbon layer for the finish?

is the actual carbon damaged or is it just the top coat?
If only the clearcoat, then you can sand it back reapply clearcoat.

looks like just the clear coat, only surface scratches, but having never dealt with the stuff before, I wasn't sure what to look for.

Certainly no bubbles etc that I've seen on some of the trademe stuff.

if its just a light scratch in the clear gelcoat u can sand it out with some wet and dry then just get a fibreglass polish and that will bring it back up...

Id be inclined to get it resprayed with a good quality clearcoat and once it cures proper to keep it waxed and clean (like you should with all car paint).

PPG do a ceramic based clearcoat called Ceramiclear which is highly durable and scratch resistant.
