SW20 driveaxles, differences and shortening.

Postby touge rolla » Tue Aug 12, 2008 4:37 pm

Ok have my MR2 (1990 turbo btw) almost back together after changing the gearbox to one from a gen3 to find the driveaxles are about 5mm from going all the way in and won't budge anymore. So I'm guessing the gen3's have a driveaxle with a slightly shorter spline, yes?
If so can I simply grind a couple of millimeters off the ends of my ones so they fit? (new driveaxles out of my budget atm)
Thanks.

Yeap they're different, dunno about grinding all the amerikans on mr2oc just get the proper driveshafts, so I take it as a no.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Yep, slightly different. I just got the proper axles when I got the newer gearbox (good luck finding hen’s teeth).
I’m guessing that you have the stock LSD in there? I have a suspicion (can’t confirm it yet) that if you have an aftermarket LSD (cusco, Kazz, etc) they will accept either gen’s axles. I have a cusco in mine.

hmmmm interesting about aftermarket LSD, really raises the question to Toyota, Why? nm.
Yes they're not that easy to find compared to the earlier model stuff (changing the suspension resulted in less getting written off I guess lol)

Because the LSD diff has a cross bar for the spider gears that the longer axles hit.

ok, makes sense then. And confirms that my new gearbox is LSD :D
I think I'll try grinding them first (what have I got to lose?)

as far as i have found out, all JDM gen2 + models that are 3sgte powered all came with a viscous lsd. so if its a gen3 box, DEFINATLY lsd :)
