Using water

Postby TRD_ZERO » Sun Aug 31, 2008 3:32 pm

There is a car im looking at swapping and i really like it but it was suspedted to have a blown headgasket so the h/g got changed and head skimmed and pressure tested. It still seems to be using a little water and the iol is a little milky. Im looking at fixing this problem and but dont know what to do next. Can i get a water pressure test done? Where on the shore?

any half decent workshop will have a pressure tester. if you suspect a leaky HG you could look at getting a TK check done as well, or a leak down test.

when you say a little milky, what do you mean? if theres a bit of white gunk on the oil cap, thats reasonably common and is caused by condensation. if the dipstick is showing milky, then its possible that there was so much water in the engine that the fresh oil got contaminated when the HG was replaced. i had to replace the oil in a car three times before it got rid of all the moisture once. was the HG replaced by a professional?

No the headgasket was done by the guy himself when he took the head off there was water in cylinder 1 but once he changed it he said ther isnt water in it now. Ill take it for one of those tests but he says it uses a little water too. Its a ae101 gtz is there a possibility that the block is bung like a cracked water jacket? I dont mind spending abit of money getting it sorted i just dont want to have to get the block replaced.

depending on the amount of water it is using, a long trip may be all it needs... an old car had a blown HG, and threw enough water into the oil errr, cavities, that it always looked milky until I took it for a trip to chch(4 hrs)... that seemed to stop the milky, I guess it just needed a good blow out.

Yeah i was thinking the oil could be contaminated from water that was left over. Its just that the water level is going down and i dont know where it is going. Hopefully not in the oil.

when you park it up chuck some cardboard underneath for the night and see if it drips. Will narrow it down (slightly) :P

what engine is it?

how did the block look when he took the head off?

could be that the block has small Pitting in between the cyl, oil galires and water jackets
this sometimes can cause issuses

The only time I've seen that, the head was cracked. It started off as just a blown headgasket, lost water, overheated, filled up blah blah, finally changed the headgasket, got worse, found the crack when the cam was removed. That was in a Nissan E15.

Its a ae101 gtz i think ill do an engine flush oil change and top the water up and see how it goes. Im hoping its just the headgasket or nothing at all.

Here is what it looked like.

dont waste money on engine flush if its using water. get that sorted first, its not hard / expensive to get it pressure tested.
