idle problems

Ive got a friend that just purchased a ae101 fxgt and when the car is cold the idle is all over the place from 1700 to 500, it just goes up and down like crazy until it gets warm then it stabelises at about 900. What is causeing it to idle like that only when cold?

Yes ive done a search and did find some interesting things but the problems my friend is experienceing isnt quite the same His only idles like crap when cold.

Possibly a vacuum leak, check for any loose hoses.

I thought it could be that but they why would it only do it on cold and be perfectly fine when warm?

what is that, where is it located and what do i check for?

+1 on checking the idle speed control valve.
They get blocked up with carbon and then won't function correctly.
Should be close to the throttle body, it will have a plug, and a couple of coolant hoses (normally). Remove it, clean out the air passages with some carb clean, dry it out then refit it.
