Help again... ke speedo cable in to T50 box

Postby trd-drifting » Wed Oct 22, 2008 10:40 pm

Any opinions welcome :)
Alright my speedo dosent work and i am still learning so bear with me
The speedo has never worked since i brought the car but it needs a wof now, the old cable was broken so i brought a new one looks exactly the same.

I have a 2tgeu in a ke 36 running a t50 gearbox

Now on the gearbox the speedo drive when the car is going (ie rear end off the ground and in gear) the speedo drive turns out of the gearbox,

I am sure the speedo it self works pulled out of cluster and if i turn the little back thing i can get the speedo up to 20kms

So this would mean the speedo cable is there any specific way to put in a older type speedo cable obviously it slots in to the speedo drive in the correct slot (only one way to put in) out of the gear box but it is not broken and it should be turning, but it does not seem like it makes it up to the speedo drive or the inside does not connect properly to the back of the cluster even though the clip etc.. is all in tact.

any ideas....

Pull the cluster out of the dash, jack the rear end up and see if the cable is turning in the dash

or pull dash out and go for a drive.. see if the cable is turning (poking up where gauge used to be).
or pull gauge cluster out, unhook speedo cable from gearbox and pull out sideways so you can spin it whilst looking at other end sticking out where gauge used to be and see if it spins when you turn the other end.

Sorry about the late reply had a busy w.e moving and havn't had time to address this problem till now.

I am no mechanic but i think the problem is either the inside cable is not long enough or the back of the speedo unit (Dash) there is sposed to be somthing poking out that goes down into the speedo into the cable.

I had a spare outer part of the speedo cable i chopped it down so there was enough inside cable showing to go inside the back of the speedo (dash) and the speedo went. Now i want to do this properly,

So what am i missing here is a photo of the speedo cable with speedo in it as it should be, shouldnt the cable be seen at the dash end and poking out a little bit.

Image

Should it be longer or is there somthing different as i brought this car a few months ago and dont know much about these sort of older cars, surely it is an easyish fix.

I tried to explain i pretty much did that and the speedo cable is turning but i am bad at explaing things but thank you for the advise.

the inner cable can be pulled thru the outer sheath. so if the cable is not attached at either end.. the inner cable can fall through and disappear from one end.

You mean the inner cable slides in and out... of the outer sheath. But when the cable is bolted up to the gearbox it can not slide further down nor go up further up is that correct, it is like the cable is to short for the outer sheath.. as when you lay them side by side (inner cable and the outer sheath) the inner cable is about 20mm short of the top of the outer sheath... hence it can not make the speedo work i think this is the problem :? If this is the problem how do i fix it properly.

from your pic it looks more similar to a ke70 cable rather than a ke25 (screw in).
the gearbox end should be sticking out. check the back of the speedo to see where the cable fits into.. check if the cable needs to be protruding from the end or sunk inside the outer part. i cant be much more help than that as i don't have a ke36 cable to look at.

Thanks for eveyones help now got it sorted much appreciated

or get another ke3# speedo cable

After talking to one of my mates turns out his litttle brother has a dx wagon as a paddock car so i went out there and took the speedo cable out of it just to see if it poked out about a 20mm at the (speedo gauge) end. Turns out it did just like my supra one does and looked exactly the same fitting as the one i had so i took it and put it in and it worked simple and easy fix :)

So the 2nd hand speedo cable i brought must off had either the wrong inner cable to match the outer sheath ie not long enough... or somthing along those lines...

:D :D
