Oil pressure and temp

Postby cat007 » Wed Nov 05, 2008 12:16 pm

Hey all,

I've been reading this:

http://supramania.com/aehaas/

Trying to get my head around it - might take a few times before it all sinks in. Thought it might be nice for others to have a read of it!

Question is this: in the article he suggests that engine oil temp can get as high as 150C. I've seen 100C on my gauge and thought that was high.....I guess not?

mine got to 150deg C. I added in another oil cooler. cut down to 120deg.
Think I need to make some ducts to my main oil cooler.

150 c is still alright for oil temps,

we had diff oil temps of close to 200 c in the focus before we added a cooler.

oil takes a lot longer to get to temp than water,
and usually runs hotter then water temps too.

usually 20 to 30 above water temp is normal

It comes down to WHERE you're measuring it.

Obviously the oil in the sump will be colder than the oil which has just run off the bottom of the pistons.

Hmm... this leads on to the question of where is the optimal place to measure oil temp?
My sensor is mounted in the sump. I assume this is normal. The guy who mounted it for me said he did the best he could to get the probe to be as far into the oil as possible.

Hmm.. I started to get concerned when I see 100-120... Should I not worry?

i measure mine after the oil filter and cooler on the return line going back to the block, take my temp pressure and turbo oil feed from same place.

Nope, thats very normal oil temp.

Diff oil in high HP cars in events like Targa, get very hot. I know guys have put oil coolers and external oil pumps on some targa cars to bring down the oil temp and decrease diff wear.

depends what you want to know.

You know the temp of the oil that is going into the engine,
which is fine,

but they normally go in the sump which would be way hotter,
so you can tell if your overheating the oil as it wrecks it's properties if cooked.

I measure my oil temps in a sandwage device between the stock oil cooler and oil filter on my MR2. I have been running Mobil 1 10/50. I max my oil temp gauge out in less than three laps at taupo (under 6 minutes) at over 300f (150c), so I don’t know what temp they are getting to.
Needless to say, I’m installing an oil cooler and thermostat before the next race.
I will be very happy if my oil temps drop to a max of 120c.
I’m also changing the oil to Castrol edge 10/60. Slightly thicker, as when the oil is that hot the pressure while downshifting is rather low.

Taking a return line temp from the oil cooler is like taking a water
temp reading off the hose coming back from the radiator. It is going
to give a "false" reading of the actual operating temp.

If you are trying to safeguard your engine, you would be better off
taking the temp at the inlet to the cooler, and ahead of any thermostatic
diverter.

To do that then either use a drill and tap into an oil gallary or undo a plug, or bolt that the factory used to plug up the oil galleries they drilled when machining the block

normally temps are taken in the sump as that is where it is hottest.
