Corolla GLX Remote Locking and Imobiliser Fob.....

Postby carlos3 » Thu Dec 18, 2008 7:28 pm

I have a NZ new 1998 Corolla 1.8 GLX that has central locking and an imobiliser, both activated by a small remote thats on the key ring. An issue arises in that if you lock the car with the remote it also activates the imobiliser. That means that if you subsequently unlock the car with the key, you can't start it as the imobiliser is on....so it has to be unlocked with the remote to get it going. Thats all good, until I find today that the remote doesn't work. The usual suspect of a flat battery in the remote seems reasonable, until I find that it appears that the remote doesn't actually come apart...it seems to be a sealed unit???? So my questions are- how do I get the car going, and what's the next step after that?

read your owners manual, it has the procedure in there (i think you leave the key to "on" for either ten mins or 30 mins.

you can replace the battery, just have to glue the case back together
the other possibility is the battery contact has come loose
when you pull it apart you will see if thats the case coz it wil fall out

Yeah - read the manual...
There is a socket in the glovebox that the remote fits into - can't remember if you put the remote in then turn the key or if the socket is for programming the new remote to your car...

AND/OR

Yeah something like put key in ignition, turn key on (don't try to start yet) wait ten minutes then turn key to starter

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

not sure if the corollas had that socket, think that was a camry thing.... socket is for programming, need a working one to do it. cant recall process for not having working remote

if the key has two metal contacts on the end then it may do.
but i suspect yours has a black fob with no contacts and a grey button
then the leave "on" thing applies
