car painting

Postby 0EBUNY » Fri Dec 19, 2008 11:35 pm

ok ive decided to spend some time and money on my old rolla wagon. i wanna get it repainted.

the paint on the front 3 panels is cracked really badly so may need to be taken back to bare metal?? i only want it painted a nice black ( i think) nothing too special.

what kinda price range should i expect for this kinda job?? and does anyone know any good/cheep painters they could recommend? im in hamilton but dont mind traveling a little for a good job/price.

thanks

There have been a few posts on new paint.
Expect a price of around $3000-$3500 for a sand back and new basic colour.
$3-500 more for metallic, and $2500-3500 for pearlesent and candy colours

Those were the rough estimates I got 2 years ago around Wellington.
Don't think prices have changed too much.

If the paint has crazy cracked then it will need to go back to bare metal. That gets spendy as obviously it takes longer to do ;)

Well, it depends what you call cheap...the panel and paint on my sedan totalled $3500, and I think that was pretty cheap, especially given the finish. Of course dont expect a show kinda finish for $2k, it'll never happen (Unless you're sleeping with the panelbeater and painter )

also black requires extra attention as everything needs to be really smooth as black will show up any imperfections really easily

When I had my old FXGT, I got that painted Silver for $3000 at a shop in Miramar which i think now has relocated to Kilbirnie somewhere.
The paint looked good, but near the bottom, roughly from the chassis to about 8 inches up, it had the orange peel effect, sorta lumpy.
You didn't really notice unless you were on your knees looking really close.
I only found out when I washed the car for the first time.
Definitely ask around, make sure to check out there previous work.
