left it charging for the afternoon, cranks over no problem now.
had my voltages a bit wrong earlier, its 14.2v at the alternator and 13.5v at the battery so only 0.7v drop.

so turns out it was just a dodgy battery, just seemed weird as I've left the car sitting for a month before then it cranks over fine first go.

yeah whoops i quoted the wrong thing and didnt read his post properly. FAIL.
