Fuel Level Senders - Options for Toyota Gauges

Postby neo » Tue Jan 27, 2009 9:35 pm

My latest project sees me replacing the factory tank (101 FXGT's have an fault in their design) with an alloy fuel cell. I had planned on replacing the factory swing arm / float style fuel level sender with one of the more generic 'stick' types / capatance based --> resistance senders.

The problem is, the Toyota setup doesnt use any resistance range I can find anywhere else / no one produces a sender that can be used with the factory cluster, has anyone found a solution to this?

Factory AE101 sender is 110 Ohm Full, 4 Ohm Empty.

Options around are:
10 Ohm Empty, 180 Ohm Full
240 Ohm Empty, 33 Ohm Full
10 Ohm Empty, 300 Ohm Full
0 - 5 Volt (expensive)

Also if anyone knows how the low fuel light works (what the little thing in the tank is fed with / used to measure, I'll be a happy chappy)
Thermistor

If someone has an work around I would be very interested, the tank depth is 320mm

Cheers

Neil

Would it not be easier to just use the complete module from the factory tank in the fuel cell?

pretty sure the fuel light just works by change in temp or something?

I could, but that would require modifying the float level, which means I'll have around 6 litres un-foamed in the cell, which will need to be partitioned off so the foam doesn't move.

Current plan of attack is to leave things the way they are, and only measure the bottom half of tank.
