*solved vvt pulley* Rough idle - blacktop 1996:?

Postby Dopamean » Wed Mar 04, 2009 12:29 pm

Probably the first response will be - this has been covered and I should search, unfortunately I don't have a huge amount of time rite now and the results are too much to troll through.

Anyways maybe someone can help, after one year of driving my 1996 Carib / Blacktop its started to have a bit of a rough idle.
Acceleration is fine - does not miss a beat.

I've noticed a bit more vibration coming through because of this also.
I have kept the car serviced every 5000kms.

Where's a good place to start?

Seriously you think it’s the VVT pulley from that?
If you can tell it’s that from the information provided, I tip my hat Sir 8O

To add to the symptoms,
There is a knocking noise that DOES go away, It will only occur if I visit 7000 rpm or higher.
Must admit I freaked when I heard it for the first time.

Heard it again on the way home so I popped the hood at home and its definitely coming from just under the rocket cover.

So I would say that I would put my money on what you have said.
So I have to apply a 12v charge to the terminals correct?

Is this a costly repair in your experiance Mr Rev?

i may not be correct, hard to diagnose noises on the net!

i suggest reading a few posts about ppl with the same issue and compare your issues with theirs.

yeah 12v to the solenoid

Well I sure hope your wrong.
Call toyota and it's a crazy $1100 for a VVT pulley.

Would an engine diagnostic pick this sort of issue up?
This kinda pisses me off because I replaced all belts water pump etc in November last year

I can buy a hole engine with around 80k on the clock for not much more than the price of the pulley :x

Before I make any more conclusions I think I need to have the car looked at, can someone recomend an Auckland mechanic thats good with 20v's?

I priced one the other week, was about $350, or slightly under.

I managed to speak with one of the sponsor’s of this website and have been offered the part (under $400) which is a nice start.

Mr. Rev or someone who has tried this, reading other posts I see that some people have disconnected the VVT circuit off the engine.

So is it safe to assume that this would not cause any damage?
Obviously I'm nursing the car around at the moment and not going to put my foot down.

Maybe a simple enough question but I'd rather be certain when it comes to these things.

Also about the tractor / diesel sound - someone else said its normal for 20v's to do this?

Normal or a sign that my VVT pulley is truly poked?

Yes I do feel like a sponge - mechanic’s is not my specialty :P
Thanks for you help guys!

EDIT: Is the link broken to the vvt 20vsick sound?

EDIT #2: Gave my blacktop an oil change and had the vvt-pulley replaced. The injectors still sound slightly loud but not too bad, the rattle has totally gone when cold, accelerating and at idle.
Money well spent IMO.

Thanks guys for your suggetions and pointing me in the right direction :)
