Which gearbox for turbo 4age?

Postby DXROLLA » Mon Apr 06, 2009 12:01 am

Ok now that my turbo build is under way ive got to decide what gearbox to run i currently have a k50 but i doubt that will hold up for long. What do you think would be the one to use? T50 or move into the w58 or something? Its going into a kp starlet

As above, you'll be hard pressed to break a W series box with a 4AGE. The boxes themselves aren't too badly priced, its just finding a bellhousing to suit which were near on $700 new. Should be a few second hand floating around but the prices are still up there

what kind of turbo/power? a t50 would handle a low-boost setup if driven nicely, but i have seen 3rd and 4th gears literally stripped on a t50 behind a 4age turbo. was running 15psi and had crazy spool though, but gives you an idea of their strength.

you should be able to pick up a 4a-w bellhousing for $500 or so if you look around and aren't in a hurry, and no one sells 4a-t bellhousing for less then $250 - $300 nowdays anyway so not a huge difference really. by the time you've blown your first or second t50 you could've paid for a w55

teeboon has had a t50 in his car for years, including a few events with 190kw!

that did seem to break it though :D

Sweet will have a hunt around for a w series, whats the difference between all the w series boxes as ive herd of w55 w56 and w58. Could you get a custom bellhousing to suit or would you be looking at mega dollers for something like that?

theres also a w57.

the only differences afaik are the gear ratios, wikipedia should be able to tell you those.

you can get bellhousings from brendan at A1 turbos in auckland, hes been making them for ages. think hes called niteB or similar on here

yeah niteB will do them, he's on garagedori more though.

main difference between w55/6/7/8 is shifter positions and gear ratios.
all bolt patterns for bellhousings etc are the same afaik.
