Flywheel bolt hole oil leak...

Postby Boosted_162 » Sun Apr 12, 2009 6:09 pm

Well, im in the middle of changing the clutch in my RC (what a freaking mission). Got to taking the flywheel off, and oil comes out the flywheel bolt holes (no i didnt drain the oil, i hoped to get away with it ). Now, is this normal? Or does it mean the rear main seal has gone? I dont really want to put my brand new exedy/jun flywheel on to get ruined!

Cheers

Out of the flywheel bolt holes? :? as in the holes in the flywheel, or the crank? Do the rear main while its apart, cheap insurance.

As soon as i loosened the flywheel bolts, oil started dripping out where the flywheel bolts to the crank. As much as i need to get the car going, i think it may be a good idea to do rear main while the motors out..

Shouldn't leak, there is nothing to leak there. The rear main seals between the back plate and the crank, not the flywheel. Should probably do it while you're in there as it is the perfect opportunity though

It explains why the whole motor is covered in oil, as well as inside the bellhousing!

Hopefully TNZ have one in stock!

Wow...

Flywheel to crank bolt holes will leak oil like all 3S series engines and 99% of Toyota engines will when bolts are removed

No the bolt threads will not leak...if you like use loctite

Crank rear main seal is the orange seal around the outside edge of crank should be changed with clutch kit if any oil is inside bellhousing has no relation to crank / flywheel bolts

Ahh ok, nice to know. Had read conflicting info everywhere. Yeah, definately oil in bellhousing so will replace the main seal before i put it back together.

Really,

Not on any I've seen as all the bolts are blind threads into the end of the flywheel, but then I have only done a few different versions.

Maybe the last owner got carried away with oiling the bolts prior to torquing the last time it was apart.
See ya

I can confirm with 3S the holes are through.
If you remove bolt it will leak oil out of there.
I had those WTF moments too ;).
