Steering Vibration

Postby Makaveli » Sat May 02, 2009 7:36 pm

Occasionally when I'm driving on the motorway around 100km/h in a straight line without braking I get vibration in the steering. I believe I have been experiencing this since I had my steering rack and pump rebuilt. I had wheel balancing and wheel alignment done with Brand new tyres. Wheels/Tyres are bigger than stock. 235/40R18 Front and 265/35R18 Rear (no spacers). The car is 1996 Celsior. Also steering is hard at parking speeds. I have been told by Toyota this is due to the size of my tyres. But I don't think I had this problem before getting the steering rack and pump rebuilt.

What can cause this? I think it might be with something not being assembled correctly in the rack? Any thoughts? Main worry for me is the vibration on the motorway

Thank You :P

It has been aligned by Toyota North Shore like twice and also once by Bridgestone when they changed the tyres. So I am not sure what's left to do.

Can it be caused by steering rack itself?

not generally unless it hasnt been tightend properly or the bush has failed allowing the rack itself to move

Wheel balence, ball joints, top hats on struts warn, rack ends, tie rod ends, brake discs warped, loose caliper, to name a few... Take your pick

I will have a look at it. But maybe its the rotors. Probably just need them machined.

Have you had your front shocks checked? I think the shock shop i.e. Wairau suspension still do free inspections.
When they're stuffed they can send a nasty vibration through the steering. Had that problem on my 86.
