HKS "style" wastegates

Postby cat007 » Mon May 04, 2009 11:26 am

Hi everyone

I've had in my possession for over a year, a new, still in box, HKS style 40mm wastegate.

I'm wondering what people thing of these? At the moment I'm using an Audi wastegate that's only 32mm and I'm worried when I wind the boost up, it might be a bit small and might not be able to vent enough.

I'm having to cut and rotate the wastegate anyway, to make room for bigger brake master cylinder stuff

Should I just chop the Audi flange off and weld the hks style one on and use that wastegate?

Does anyone use these wastegates?

I have boost cut on my ECU so if anything goes wrong with the wastegate, I wont overboost....

The wastegate looks like this:

If you want to use it, definitely open it up, re loktite the small grub screws that hold the diaphragm to the shaft.
Sometimes the diaphrams can fail, so maybe good to replace it with something better. But it will still last a while.

on the other note, I didnt get my car run in on the weekend! damn oil pump decided to go bung again so I gota change it. Hope I can still make 1st June!

thanks - I'll do that then! It's shorter than the audi one which gives me a bit more room to make heat shields etc

How come your oil pump went bung? Was it a 2nd hand jobbie? or a reco of the old one?

You better make it on the 1st! :P

it was a brand new toyota unit.
Engine keeps wearing the gears out for some reason. Then it jams the relief valve (either open or closed so either infinty oil pressure or really low pressure), When the pump wears it can still provide more than enough oil pressure. So for now just stick in another pump, jam the internal relief valve and make an external relief valve with a filter to catch the metal.

There's only 1 nut - the diaphram is sandwiched between two plates which are bolted to the shaft. I guess I'll just loctite everything :)

as evil si pointed out to me, the more boost you run, the less work the wastegate does - it needs to stay shut longer so the turbo can create the boost (or something to that effect)

don't necessarily need a bigger wastegate to run more boost...

I agree completely

However I will be ripping the engine out after the track day on 1st June for an over-haul and work the head to let it breathe - which will mean more airflow which means more exhaust gasses that the wastegate has to deal with.....
